Reflexology

Reflexology is the science based upon the principle that there are reflex areas in hands, feet and ears that correspond to the organs and systems of the body. Reflexology deals with internal energies that can create a block of energy flow due to many internal and external factors.

Reflexology can help a client cope and feel much better as there can be a general change in temperament and therefore the client becomes more interested in home/recreational activities/work.

Energy levels can improve. All the body senses are more relaxed and feelings of nervousness, anxiety and panic can be alleviated. A more positive attitude can follow, therefore there is less negativity and more emotional sensitivity.

Hormones become more in balance and metabolic rate is stabilised as the thyroid function is facilitated.

Reflexology, together with ambience, lighting, and specific reflex stimulation via the skilled practitioner can help calm inner emotions. Head relaxes, eyes close, breathing slows down releasing tension in the neck an shoulder areas, this in turn helps ‘kick start’ the body’s own natural self healing process.

During Reflexology, Seratonin is released which is the body’s natural tranquilliser/mood enhancer, this stimulates the reflexes to the brain, which in turn helps with irregular sleeping patterns. Our bio-feedback system is helped to regulate itself.

Blood Pressure is lowered via the relaxation process, circulatory systems are improved (cardio vascular and lymphatic) releasing a fresh supply of oxygen, blood and nutrients to all the body parts and increasing the effectiveness of the body’s own natural elimination processes.

Digestive problems can also be helped eg: sluggish digestive systems, diverticulitis, constipation, flatulence, bloating and IBS. The aim is to help the client relax, in order for the body to reach homeostasis – where all the systems of the body work in unison with each other.

Origins of Reflexology

The Chinese are said to have used an early form of reflexology more than 5000 years ago in their use of pressure therapies. Egyption tomb artwork dating from around 2000 BC shows foot massage, too: an indication that the benefits of working on the feet to encourage general good health have been acknowledged for some time. These ancient forms of foot massage were based on the principle that energy zones run throughout the body.

This principle – which became zone therapy – was further developed in the early 19th Century with the discovery that applying pressure in various places along 10 vertical zones the length could cause underlying problems. These ideas were expanded when practitioners such as Eunice Ingham found that working with the feet was most effective, as they were the most sensitive and responsive areas, with thousands of nerve endings. Reflexology was introduced into Britain in the early 1960’s and its popularity continues to grow.
